HP Deskjet 720c

My printer cartidge LED is flashing and I receive a
"The computer has lost communication with the printer"
message when I try to print. The cable and printer port
are OK and I've run through the Toolkit diagnostics. I
tried the self-test using the buttons on the unit and
there was preprinting sound but no printing. How might
the flashing printer cartridge light and the communications
loss be related. Does the self-test failure indicate a hardware
problem. Does it make more sense to repair a four year
old printer or buy a new one? Thanks.
