Hp HP DeskJet 600

600 series HP Deskjet

My printer problem appears to be mechanical
failure of the roller system.

It makes abnormal noises when the paper is moved
during the print process.

Is there a common problem with the 600 HP deskjet series regarding the wearing out of the positioning system?

This has occured on two such printers I have.

Don Schwarz
Your problem sounds like a carriage stall condition. When the carriage can't slide on the rail, the drive belt slips making the noise. Lubricate the carriage rail with some silicon spray or teflon spray lube.

The quality of printed text is very poor. Smeary horizontal lines are scattered throughout the text. This does not happen when I print greeting cards.

The smeary horizontal lines are what's known as fibre tracking. Usually caused by lint, hair, etc building up on the underside of the carriage. Remove the cartridges, push back on the carriage & wipe the underside of the carriage with a damp lint free cloth.
