False Paper Jam on HP Laserjet 4

I have an old but loved HP Laserjet 4 that has recently started giving me a problem. It says there is a paper jam when in fact there is no jammed paper. I have gone through a host of troubleshooting procedures and corrective actions to no avail.

I have checked both the photo sensors associated with jam reporting. I have checked that the back door is closed properly. I have removed the exit assembly, fuser, and driveline and inspected and cleaned.

The problem arose after a legitimate paper jam that I cleared and now I can't clear the error. It always reports a paper jam on startup.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Did the paper come out intact when you cleared the jam? Inevitably, it rips and a small piece will be left lodged on a sensor arm. It would be between where the paper enters the printer and where it comes up under the metal plate. Take the tray out and tilt it back and look up into the slot. If you can't see it, then push some thin card stock like a piece of file folder up and it should dislodge whatever is in the paper path.
