Hp HP LaserJet 4

HP 4+ Vertical banding

Hi everyone

I've had a good look through the forums on this one - just want to see what you think about my conclusions.

I have an old 4+ which has been a great servant since I rescued it from being scrapped second-hand seven years ago. While the print quality is still very good, it's recently developed dark bands, vertically down the page.

From reading around here, I guessed that it was a cartridge issue and replaced the cartridge today. However, I still have vertical bands with the new cartridge. There is also a repeating horizontal line, 37mm apart, down the page, and I can see some text 'repeating' faintly down the page (I can make out ghosted words which appear further up the page, appearing again lower down).

I've tried the half-page test - the marks are present prior to fusing, so it's not the fuser.

All this makes me think that I've been unlucky and received two dodgy cartridges in a row. What I want to check is this: is there *anything* which could have caused a brand new cartridge to have a dirty/not-properly cleaning drum? Is there any possibility that this is a scanner/mirror problem? Or should I just try again with another new cartridge?

Many thanks for any help!
Andrew
Well, there are no "brand new" cartridges any longer. Just old "new" stock, which would give you the printing results that you are seeing, or re-manufactured.

What is the source of your two dodgy cartridges?

Fair enough! They are both from eBay, but from suppliers whose cartridges have worked well for me in the past. - amgriffiths
Thanks dmz - I'm in the UK though so the shipping isn't economical. I'll shop around here - but just wanted to check there is nothing else I should be trying other than new cartridges?

They're probably not replacing the drum wiper blade if they are remanufacturing. If it is Old New stock, then the blade will fail just with age. We sell Old New stock, but we open them up and replace the drum wiper blades before we sell them.

Thanks for all your help. I made the supplier send me another cartridge which works well. Good to know there's life in the old printer yet! Does an amazing job connected to my Mac via Ethernet cable.
