HP4100 new cartridge stopped printing. Machine OK

I put a remanufactured cartridge into our HP 4100 MFP. It worked. A couple of days later it stopped working. It prints blank pages, and the printer complains that the cartridge is out of toner. The machine is set to ignore that warning, and print anyway.

I swapped the cartridge with one from our other HP 4100 DTN. The HP 4100 MFP now works normally, and the HP 4100 DTN fails to print. It is obviously a cartridge problem, but the cartridge worked initially.

What has changed, and can I fix it other than by exchanging the rebuilt cartridge?
