HP officejet j6450 "carriage jam"

I have looked for this problem addressed and never found a thread. I have a printer that is grinding the ink cartridge service tray gear. When the drive gear engages the ink cartridge wiper tray, it pulls the tray forward okay and everything works fine. The problem starts when the driver reverses and the tray is returned to the fully retracted position. The driver does not stop and grinds the gear for about 4 seconds. At this point the error message "carriage jam" appears and all I need to do to complete the print job is to push ok on the front panel. The gear grinds a couple more times but the printer finishes the job. It seems to do this after it has set a while. The tray appears to be at the fully retracted position. There is no binding of the carriage and there is no more travel available for the tray. I cant see a sensor or anything to tell the driver to stop so I am kind of stuck and looking for ideas. Any help is appreciated.
