HP 5p won't print

The first sign of trouble was that this HP 5p would eject a comppletely blank piece of paper when it was sent a print job. The paper was warm, but had nothing on it. (No error on the computer or printer.)

I replaced the toner cartridge.

Now when the printer is turned on, it initially sounds and looks normal with the motor turning briefly and the lights flashing. But then the green 'ready' light and the amber 'error' light are both on steady, and the motor continuously cycles on and off.

I've checked the paper path and it is completely clear. Someone else looked at it and thought the formatter was bad. But I know better than to take any action before checking here!

I know it is hard to diagnose these things without looking at the printer, but are the symptoms above common enough to make an educated guess?

I'll have to go along with the formatter diagnosis. Thanks for the confidence in us.
