Tic marks from Epson 740

I've got an Epson 740 that's been working pretty well. But now it is putting little tic marks on the printout, but only when printing black. I've put a scan of the detail at http://www.oblong.com.au/print.gif. The coloration is a scanner artifact. That's printing at "best" quality. If I print at lower quality the marks are still there, but there are fewer (greater vertical spacing). I've changed ink cartridges. I've done the nozzle cleaning process. There don't appear to be blocked nozzles. I've even pulled the printer apart and physicaly cleaned the print head surface.

Anyone know what is causing that, and if there is a solution?
