HP 9000 Duplex Problem

I thought I had posted this but apparently it didn't go through.

Last week, the local college decided to take the tray 4 assy from a fully functioning HP 9000 and move it to a HP 9050. The move went well except for a hickup in not moving the paper path connector from the 9000. Once that was done, the 9050 worked like a champ.

Now, the HP 9000 has a problem duplexing from tray 3. Tray 2 duplexes properly. Paper pickup rollers in tray 3 have been replaced, the tray has been replaced, the duplexer has been replaced - all to no avail. The PIU was replaced approximately 2 years ago. The parts replaced all function properly in another printer.

Occasionally, while trying to duplex from tray 3, a phantom "jam in tray 4" is seen. The 9000 is now just a base unit - with only trays 2 & 3 plus the manual feed tray with duplexer option.

Nothing in the original HP 9000 manual nor the combined HP 9000/9040/9050 manual has been helpful.

Any ideas?
