Epson 740i USB problem

My old Epson 740i printer is no longer recognized by my computer via the USB port. I borrowed a friend's working 740 and my computer recognizes it... so I have eliminated any kind of software error. When I connect my broken 740 to his machine, he cannot "see" the printer on the USB port as well.

So I figure my USB port is somehow messed up. I called Epson tech support and they focused on the software side of things... I told them that was not the problem and everything we did ended up not solving the problem... they tell me I need to take in my printer and get a motherboard replaced... Is there anyway to diagnose the USB port problem? If it is a simple fix like resoldering the connector or replacing a capacitor or resistor somewhere... I can do that easy... But I need to get some technical specs to be able to check the motherboard...

Any help is appreciated
