Hp HP LaserJet 2P

HP 2P memory

I have an old, pretty bare HP 2P that I have repaired back into service. Connected to a fairly current Win98 machine. However, I get a lot of memory errors when trying to do such apparently simple things like print an Excel spreadsheet, or a Word doc with graphics.

Is it reasonable to spend the money for a memory upgrade? If so, how much memory would it take to be able to print the things I am trying to print?

As an aside, can anyone explain why lasers need all this memory and ink jets don't appear to?
Hi Steve,

If you can get cheap memory expansions for them, yes, it's worth upgrading - pricing varies greatly from place to place - second hand ram should be readily available these days in the US...

The IIP is reasonable under win3.1 - win 95 & 98 get much more memory hungry - dropping the dpi can help fit more on the page, at a considerable loss of image quality...

If you do add ram, add the full 4mb - you're paying a premium for the board it goes on, not the actual ram that's on it, so get as much as you can - 1mb will still leave you with errors...

Lasers have to format a page in memory before they can print - inkjets can stop & wait while the next line is spooled from the PC... a quicker PC can drive an inkjet faster, but you can need immense amounts of free hard drive space if you want to print a large, hir res colour graphic intensive page... but you'd need huge amounts of ram on the printer to do the same with a colour laserjet...

I'd suggest 2mb expansion, it'll go up to 4mb. You only need that much for full page graphics. We were selling memory for $10 mb, but ran out because of heavy demand. Might get some in the near future.

Do you have the memory expansion boards and memory for an HP IIP+, also where do I install the memory board??? I saw a place for a Font cartridge but I have not found anyplace for a memory board. I have worked on many HP II's and their memory area is easy to find and add/remove the card. Does it take special memory or will one meg simms work??ThanksJim [email protected]

The memory expansion board goes in the rear. You lower the back panel by loosening the 2 captive screws. There's 3 screws holding the i/o board in and on the 2+ there is a connector to remove. We're expecting a shipment of boards any day now, probably tomorrow. I'll post them back on the site when we get them in.
