Hp HP LaserJet IIIP+

HP LJ III-P No paper pickup

My trusty HP LaserJet IIIP (that I've had from new in 1992) suddenly stoppped picking up paper. And, of course reports paper jam 13.

I installed your LaserJet IIP/IIIP No Paper Pickup Repair Kit but this has made no real difference. I was concerned it might not because the old parts don't look all that worn.

It seems to make all the right noises, as I recall them, right down to the clicking of the solenoid that releases the pickup roller to turn but still no paper moves. I can't see any way to operate the printer open enough to confirm visually that the pickup roller really is turning. Perhaps there is a trick for checking that?

If I open the door and push paper in through the throat a quarter inch or so beyond the normal stopping point then sometimes a sheet will be picked up and then it prints fine.
You've got a beam detect error, it won't print with that error. If you can hear the scanner motor wind up smoothly, then it would be a failed laser pca. If it doesn't wind up smoothly, I'd replace the scanner motor.

Is the black hinged door at the bottom of the paper throat supposed to be spring loaded?

Examining the mechanism it seems logical that the cams would have to push against something, but on my printer the black door in the paper throat moves freely and the spring, if there was one, has vanished. The is a hole about 5mm diameter dead center of that white front panel that ordinarily hinges forward allow access to the toner cartridge).

There is supposed to be a spring in the center of that black lifting plate. If the spring is gone, the plate won't lift the paper up to where the roller will grab it. There should be a plastic plug in the hole. Let me know what you need and I'll send them to you complimentary.

I also have this same problem, but it doesn't look like the rollers are bad? I don't get an error message at all, it just says, "Ready". The bar doesn't seem to release so the paper can be lifted up. Could it be just the rollers?? I have the spring and plastic plug. The paper just won't lift!!

Also the buttons don't seem to work. I try to print a test page from the printer and get nothing. Any help would be greatful.

Do the rollers turn? Have you tried an engine test as shown in the Reference Section of the site?

Every time I do the engine test, I get 51 Error code. The rollers do turn when warming up.

Also the printer seems to want to print now but the paper keeps getting jammed whenever I try a test page.

Could it be the toner cartridge? I recently replace it (with an original HP cartridge from Office Max). It worked fine for a while, now all of sudden it quit working. The scanner motor sounds like it winds up smoothly (replace it about 4 years ago with parts from you). And if it is the PCA do you have them and a price quote? Thnks

Toner cartridge can cause the error. At the front of it there is a plastic protrusion (looks like a shark's fin). It pushes open the shutter in the laser assy. I only saw one of them that caused the problem. The fin was there, but for some reason it didn't open the shutter. I added a little bit to the end with some epoxy and that cured the problem. If not, I have some PCAs in stock. email me if you need one.
