Canon Canon Pixma IP3000

canon ip3000 printing graphics fine, pix wrong

have a canon pixma ip3000 - have never had a problem with it.

recently has been printing all photographs looking like faded polaroids, but all 4 ink tanks seem to be working. prints graphics (i.e., a map from google) flawlessly.

when printing a photograph that i've laid graphics on top of, the graphics print flawlessly, the photograph prints like a faded polaroid.

problem is not in the files - the same thing happens across different files, and the files print fine on other machines.

did deep cleanings, no change. pulled print head and rinsed with warm water, per other forum suggestions - no change. nozzle check test pattern very strange:

black grid: perfect
first line of 6C: perfect
second line 6C (supposed to be lighter blue): not present
first line 6M: perfect
second line 6M (supposed to be lighter magenta): not present
sole 6Y line: perfect

?? do i bother removing the print head and trying to clean with denatured alcohol, per other posts, or is this an electronics scramble that i can't fix?

many thanks in advance to the collective wisdom of forum geniuses...
