Epson Epson Stylus Photo RX620

Epson Stylus RX620 : Weird error

I get the following error when I turn my printer on:

"Open the scanner unit, replace the appropriate BK ink cartridge and Close the scanner unit. Then press OK to continue."

I know my ink is out, but I should still be able to scan documents as I have before with no ink. The error comes back no matter what I do. I had the printer unplugged for hours and still the error pops-up. Any ideas?

Thanks all.
For anything to work in the printer ALL of the cartridges must have ink. You can't scan with no ink in the printer. Printers are designed to work this way and there is no way around it.

Is there a way to trick the printer into thinking there is ink in the cartridges so I can test the scanner before I go out and buy ink cartridges? I could have sworn I was able to use the scanner without ink before.

The funny thing is, I emailed epson customer service a while ago about error message...they replied with "this printer must be taken to the nearest epson service center for a repair" And I bet the techs would have charged me to tell me I just need ink and the printer is designed to work that way =/
