Sharp AL-1655CS RSPF scanner jams

I am trying to fix a problem with the printer at our Church. Whenever I use the RSPF, the scanner moves about 1/2 inch then jams. I removed the back cover to watch it move. I can see the lower side of the belt go slack and then it reverses to go back to the normal position. Earlier I removed the scanner lock tab so I know that is not causing the problem. The copier works just fine if I copy something on the glass bed. I don't get any error messages and all of the wheels look good. It just seems to hit a hard jam through using the RSPF. Any thoughts?
Have had to remove the glass on a few of these and lubricate
where the scanner rides.

have also had a AR 157e scanner completely fail
what is your error code?

I don't get any error codes. It just jams hard and then returns to its original position. The way it stops acts like it is almost hitting something and not a lubrication issue. If I remove the paper from the feeder the light goes out and it operates normally.
I can move the scanner by hand and it will operate normally by copying on the glass
