HP IIP -- CPU says out of paper when full

I have IIP w/ opt lower paper tray. The self test shows the print. I had a error 22, but fixed with new cable. However, now I get the messaGE in windows that it is out of paper when I try to print. The printer shows ready and the paper is full. However, the machine never gets the signal or hums to power up on print command from CPU. What gives?
I think that it lost its i/o port. Take the printer off line and print a self test by hitting alt and test at the same time. Check the self test page and see if it has a line that says i/o=paralel. If you don't see it, let me know and I'll give you reset instructions.

I think you got software problems.
