HP 2575 won't print yellow, even w. new cartridge!

Hi, can't find mention of this problem before...

My HP 2575 All-in-one stopped printing yellow. All other colours fine, but no yellow, so no green, etc. Obviously I concluded the cartridge was empty so replaced with a new one. Amazingly, I got the same problem - still no yellow.

I have cleaned the print heads several times (even got out the cotton swab and did it by hand), and cleaned the contacts on the back of the cartridge and on the printer. No change. This is not a heavily used printer so I don't believe it's just died of old age.

Then, first print this morning, a very odd result. I had to print a document containing black, red and blue, so I thought, the 2575 will do even though there's no yellow, because this document doesn't need yellow. To my astonishment, the red parts of the document printed GREEN! So now I know the cartridge is physically capable of dispensing the yellow ink. I printed the same document 3 or 4 times and on the later copies the colour shaded to red then became all red. Always with the same PC and print driver, so the green substituting for red isn't a driver issue, it's in the printer.

This must be a clue about the problem but I have no idea what it's telling me. Can anyone help please?
