Hp HP LaserJet 4

HP4+ prints too light

I've just inherited a 4+ and apparently it's always printed very lightly. I've checked all the settings and have even tried a different toner cart. The print outs are readable but only about half as dark as it should be. Any suggestions? TIA
Check the laser scanner. More than likely it is dirty. It has been a while since I have worked on a printer, but that is where I would start.

I'll give it a look-see. Where is, or how do I access the laser scanner? As a side note, the print outs are uniformly printed, that is, there are no streaks or one side being lighter/darker than the other. Thanks for your tip.

Before you go tearing into it, it could be set to economode which is a toner saving feature.
Press Menu until Printing Menu appears.
Press item until Economode appears
Press +/- to change from off to on.
Press enter.

Voila! Economode was the culprit. Thanks, Moe.

Now ... new problem. Looks like I need a new envelope pick-up roller. Is that readily available and do you know where I can obtain instructions for swapping it in?

Thanks for your help. Really, really apprecaite it.

I'm not sure if we have any stock on that MF pickup roller. email [email protected] It's not hard to replace and we can provide guidance.

Moe -- Found a how-to website and I swapped rollers from an old HP4m. Everything copasetic now. Couldn't have fixed it without the help from this website. Thanks again.
