Canon Canon Pixma IP3000

Canon IP3000 yellow cartridge sucking up magenta

OK, we have two IP3000s here and in quick succession they have both started with this problem.

A print containing a yellow element will be printed in a rather muddy colour, which on examination of the print cartridges, is due to the yellow cartridge absorbing magenta ink. Despite numerous head cleans, new cartridges etc., the problem reoccurs shortly after each new yellow cartridge is inserted (although the first few pages are OK).

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? One of the printers was far more heavily used than the other, but having now swapped them, they are both doing it.
