Thanks for replying Robert,

I have checked the control panel ribbon cable as well as the carriage ribbon cables. They seem to be ok. Checked continuity. Is there anything else I should be looking for??
Now this morning the behaviour was a bit different. Switch it on, initiliazed, came to ready status (green led on) the press the form feed button (the one in the middle) then died again. I really don't know what to think.

Thanks for your time

I found my problem, a burnt printhead. Somehow the ink got to the electrical connection causing a short circuit, causing the printer to shut down.

thank you

I'm having the same problem with my 900. Whatever caused you to think to take the ink carrage apart enough to see that ink was shorting something on the printherd. Amazing.

Hey everyone.. Sad to hear your stories.. I have seen this problem before. Usually this happens because my customers have used different type of ink cartridges. Remember epson like glass it breaks really easy, but when its working great it really does the job.

I kinda agree with your comments about using different inks. After seeing Sam's comments, I tore my printhead apart and also found a charred PC board. But I didn't see any evidence of ink leakage.

My guess is this problem isn't so much due to ink leakage (isn't the ink a poor conductor??). But rather it's due to people who use generic cartridges that don't have quite as much ink in them as the genuine Epson's, or who refill their cartridges and only fill them "half or so full", and consequently, they run out of ink before the 900's ink use counter says the cartridges are near empty. They continue printing with no/little ink flow to cool the heads, and the heads soon overheat and fry the PC board, etc.

I think my printheads are declining. What's the procedure to remove/repair? What's the cost for replacement?

Can someone point me to a service manual for the 900?

Were you able to obtain a manual for your 900... I need one also.

Thanks, Richard

Here's the reply I received from a "kind listener" named Bill.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on the manual and software. But if you still want it try this.

Go to
Search for Epson 900 manual.

What will likely come up is the item you want with a $15 or so buy it now option vs. a possiible $10 bid and waiting for the auction to end. For only $5 more, I opted for the buy it now bid.

Looking for someone to send me a copy of the service manual file for Epson SC 900 (not '900 Photo').

To be specific, free is what I'm looking for. I've seen all the "buy it here" offers including e-Bay, but frankly, I'm strapped.

Thanks for your generosity.

You can download it for free from this site. Go in the Reference section and then follow Manual.

Epson 900 service manual file on FYOP page is corrupt. Downloaded it and it won't open in Acrobat reader or other readers.

Anyone have this file that they can send me?

Download the latest Acrobat release, older won't work.

If you cannot do that or you don't want to, the file can be viewed also with Ghostscript (indexes are not supported).

The problem is not the viewer program, but the file server. When a download is started, the server terminates the download prematurely. I've asked several others to attempt downloads from the manuals web page, and they have the same problems I've had.

I have the latest version of Acrobat reader, as well as several other applications that will open a valid PDF file. All of them say that the downloaded file is either corrupt or not a PDF file. Also, each corrupt downloaded file shows a different file size, which supports the claim that the server is stopping the transfer, randomly, before the entire file is downloaded.

Someone finally downloaded the file I needed after trying many, many times, and e-mailed it to me.

Several years ago my wife and I purchased an Epson Stylus 900 printer. It was fast and printed clear. Even photos were not bad. Then it got to where the ink jets kept clogging. The last day I used the printer. It went through the motions of printing but sent each page through the printing process, coming out blank. We tried cleaning ink jets but nothing fixed the problem. It doesn't print at all even tho it goes through the motions. We used this printer about three years with great success. No replacement can compare to the satisfaction we had with our Epson Stylus 900. I hated to part with it and placed the printer in our storage shed.

I was wondering if it would be worth having repaired. Anyone got an idea of what might be wrong and how to fix it? Also we have a new computer Dell with Vista Home Version. Would the Epson 900 be compatible with Windows Vista Home Version?
