Apple PLW problem: lights then no lights

At power-up, my Apple Personal Laser Writer NTR goes through its normal start-up sequence all the way to a solid green top light, but only briefly. The green light then flashes a few times, and then all the lights stay out and the printer no longer responds. Opening the printer with the Apple LaserWriter utility (from MacOS9) offers the message: "Printer error: cover open" -- even though it is not.

The last time I successfully printed with it, it also made a strange sound, although I can't remember the exact details.

Any idea what's wrong and any advice would be appreciated.
I see that there is an "all lights out" repair kit available, but I'm not sure this qualifies.

Well, if all the lights are out and the kit says it fixes an "all lights out" problem, then I guess it would qualify.

OK. Just thought that might have meant that the lights were never coming on at all.
