Hp HP LaserJet 4

HPLJ 4/4M uneven fusing

I have an HP Laserjet 4 (upgraded to 4M) that has been in storage for a very long time.

I have just noticed that repeating portions of toner toward the right side of the page do not fuse completely and may be rubbed off the paper.

I surmise that in prolonged storage the lower rubber fuser roller has developed a flat spot and the paper is not being squeezed tightly to the teflon coated heat roller. Am I on the right track?

The printer is super clean and only has 25.5K pages on it. The fuser is absolutely spotless to the eye with a smooth perfect surface on the coated heat roller.

If I replace the lower roller (rubber) should I also invest in some bushings for it?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Before you go off replacing stuff, check the shipping lever positions on the fuser. The shipping levers are thin metal arms that are against the outsides of the vertical supports. The proper position for them is down. If they are up, they remove pressure from the fuser rollers.
