Deskwriter
I have an older HP Deskwriter (310 series?).
It was working fine, and then one day it was no longer recognized
by the computer (Mac Quadra). I reinstalled the driver/software,
changed cables, unplugged the printer overnight . . . all to no avail.

Could it be the serial connection in the printer? I have another printer
networked on the computer, and it works fine.
Never seen one of those have a communications problem. I'd try it on another computer if you can find one. The serial connection is part of the logic board and wouldn't be worth the cost of repairing it.
Originally I had the deskwriter connection via appletalk,
along with a second printer. The connection works with the
second printer. So, I disconnected the Deskwriter from the
Appletalk and and connected it directly to the computer with
a serial cable. Still no recognition.
