HP Laserjet 6L faded words on sides

I have just got this print for free and it prints fine but on the sides of the page the words are faded. Does anyone have any ideas. Here is a link to the image.

Replace the toner cartridge.

I've a hunch that it might be dirty scanner mirrors! The cartridge would be the first place to start but if that doesnt work id clean the scanner assembly. Its not too big of a job.

If you look at the irregularity of the print defects, there is no way it can be caused by the scanner mirrors. Any dirt on the scanner mirror will translate into white lines as they will show up in the same place on every rotation. Light dust on the mirrors will cut the laser light reflection, but again will do so in the same vertical plane, resulting in light print. It can not cause the effect visible in those scans. Therefore, the problem has to be emanating from the toner cartridge. - moe
