Distorted Printing & Carriage Jam Msg - HP 5610

I have an HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One. When I try to print with it, the image comes out very distorted (crooked, blurry, etc.), sometimes with a bit of a clicking sound (because I think it's trying to print off the paper, it's so crooked), and I get a error message after it's printed saying "Carriage Jam" (and I usually have to pull the page all the way out after it prints). Just opening and closing the cartridge door gets the error message to go away - I don't actually have to clear anything else out. The one thing that seems to work okay is printing straight black text (like a simple word document).

Can this be fixed?! How do I do it?

Thanks in advance,
look for a silver round rod that goes through the print carriage assembly. once located, clean with rag and alcohol, then put a small amount of light lube on it and move carriage back and forth to work it in.

This was great advice! I've never really fixed anything before. I did this in 5 minutes and now my printer is working. I thought I would have to buy a new one. - Anonymous
What kind of lube do you recommend?

I agree with the comments above - 5 min fix to a problem that I thought was going to be expensive or require a new printer (with a lot of wasted $ on toner cartridges) - thanks for posting this fix!

Thank you all...I had to use gun oil to lube up the bar, but ALAS! It works.
