HP2840: workstations cannot connect to scanner

I solved this problem with some help from the web and post the solution here in the hope it will help someone else. My networked HP2840 AIO suddenly stopped scanning (copying and printing ok), all workstations (all Win XP machines) reporting that they had problems connecting to it (although they could see the device ok on the web interface). Turns out that there had been a power outage on the router and the printer had been reassigned to a different IP; the scanner software can't cope with this. Fixing the IP back to the original value (using the web interface to the printer) removed the problem. I've left it on fixed IP now in the hope that will stop it recurring. If anyone gets similar issues and/or has a more elegant solution, I'd be interested to hear.
