Epson Epson Artisan 700

epson stylus photo 700

My Epson Stylus Photo 700 has taken to making some pretty obnoxious noises when first switched on. The print head runs all the way to the left and begins to make a ratcheting noise as the drive belts try to send it through the left side of the printer! This gets the print margins on the paper misaligned, so that the left margin starts at about the center of the paper. Sounds like something in the way of a sensor that should recognize when the print head is at its maximum travel on the left side of the printer is burned out. Any clues, and is it worth repairing?
I have just aquired an Epson Stylus Photo 700 doing exactly the same thing. Do you get a loud "snap" as the printhead moves back from the far left on startup? I'm posting a question here about this, so stay tuned!

My Photo 750 is doing the same thing! Anyone know what the left margin switch sensor is and how it is repaired?
It looks like the metal arm gets pushed by the cartidge carrier and it then disengages a white plasic gear.
Any ideas appreciated!

I've got a photo 700 doing the same thing you describe. Had to take it in for service underwarranty. Not sure what they did to it was fixed. Worked great with my G4 Macintosh. Then I pluged back into my powerbook and Whamo! Same problem. Any ideas?

Epson tech support (Photo 750 is 562-276-7226) advised me to try a ROM reset. (1) turn off (2) press and hold clean & feed buttons (3) while holding them, turn on then quickly (4) when top lighht blinks first time quickly press feed.
It did not fix mine! Two years is not much product life when my HP870 is four years old and used a lot more than the Epson750!

My photo 700 did the same type of thing, I manually pushed the printhead back and forth, turned printer on and off etc, started working normally I thought, but now I have red parrallel lines through everything, but working great otherwise..I am puzzled...expensive printer and epson has crappy support, they tell me to clean printhead...duh have done that a few hundered times already......

I sent an email to Epson support. They gave me the following ROM reset procedure. I did the ROM reset. Then I printed an email (black ink only) and ran the print head check utility twice. All three attempts produced the proper result. But I have yet to print any photos or lengthy documents. Time will tell. Give the ROM reset procedure a try, and let me know if it does or does not work for any of you. Good luck.ROM RESET PROCEDURE FROM EPSON FOR THE PHOTO 700Thank you for taking the time to contact Epson. I had the same problem, and eventually found the home position sensor to be the problem.
It's only held in position by it's own rather flimsy looking plastic clips,i went to move it and it fell away in my hand.
so i repositioned it and bent the bracket slightly upwards.
I've had no bother since.

I have had this sort of problem, and traced it to the smooth metal shaft that the head travels on(just below the timing belt) becoming contaminated.

As the head moves along, the friction is so great that the timing belt skips a tooth or two.

I clean the shaft using 3-in-1 oil on a paper towel- when the towels come out clean, I apply another very thin layer of oil.

I've had to do this three times so far- about 18 months per cleaning. Sure beats a new printer!
