CX5400 printing/copying color bands & solid color

My CX5400 all-in-one, without warning, began to print thin bands of colored lines in my printouts. I changed the print setting to only black & white and the colored lines were still there. I then aligned the print help; and cleaned the print heads consecutively 5 times. This made it worse. Now the colored lines are quarter-inch bands of yellow, magenta, and blue. I can read the text but it has a page full of colored vertical bands. I tried to copy a document which produced a nearly full page of solid forest green color with some yellow/magenta/blue banding on the edges and you couldn't read a thing. Does anyone know what I can try next? I called Epson, and they told me it was may be my ink cartridges... I am using generic cartridges and have been for a long time with no problems. It just doesn't sound like an ink cartridge problem to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated
