HP Lifetime Guarantee on OEM cartridges?

I saw it mentioned a couple of times in these forums that HP OEM toner cartridges have a lifetime guarantee. It this true? Does anyone know how this works? I have a original HP cartridge in a HP LJ 4M which is probably 8 years old but with very low page count. It has streaking that appears to from the wiper blade not performing properly. This guarantee all sounds a bit too good to be true.

Could this problem possibly be covered?
Where would I return the cartridge?
Must I return it where I bought it?
What if they are out of business?

If you called HP you might get a helpful person, but odds are against it.

If you try I would advise you to say you bought the cartridge a few years ago, and don't give any more detail as they are unlikely to replace an 8 year old cartridge.

Note that the definition of few is two or more.

Lifetime is just that. As long as there is toner in the cartridge. A guy recently (at my prodding) got his original cartridge that was 7 years old replaced. You just have to have enough persistence to perservere. They will try to wear you down and tell you that your printer warranty has expired. If you keep at it, they will eventually capitulate and send you that new cartridge. If you don't want to go through the trouble, you can just replace the wiper blade.

Actually I would prefer replacing the wiper blade than wasting all day or more on the phone with these people. Moe, I tried sending emails to you about purchasing the wiper blade for the LJ 4M. You mentioned elsewhere that you had them. I don't know if my email is reaching you. I can't find the wiper blade under the printer repair kits.

Oops, I just got your response, Moe.
Thanks. I will order it right now.
