Epson 740 half paper feed

I noticed a thread from quite a long time ago about paper feed problems with the Epson 740. Someone had a problem of the page feeding in one quarter of the way and stopping.

Now I have the same problem apparently, and the previous solutions aren't working for me. The problem as I see it is the initial paper feed (where the carriage engages the clutch) advances it so far, then the carriage does a little dance, and it is supposed to advance just a bit more. Either something is blocking the pathway or it's just not grabbing. Regardless, the paper never gets to the main rollers, so when printing, the head prints onto the printer, not the paper (which sits still). I tried pushing the paper feed button, and it loads the same way, and when I push again to eject the paper, the rollers just spin without contacting the paper.

I can't see far enough into the roller assembly to figure out where the problem is. I'd like to dismantle the whole thing to see, but aside from the top cover I'm not sure how the thing comes apart. I do like to haphazardly pop screws out, but I may not get this one back together if I don't do it right.

Any help would be much appreciated.
