HP 855C Diagnosis?

HP 855C powers up with both lights alternately
flashing...head does <not> appear jammed, goes
all way to left then back to left (hard stop by
left side of top opening). Paper feeds via page
feed button, but can't print test page as will not
stop flashing to allow for it...

How to diagnose what actual problem is?
While somewhat dated, it has had <very> little usage
so can't believe it's actually "worn out", but may
not be practical to fix....

That's a carriage stall condition. Does the head slam to the left before the lights flash. If it does, then check the roller engage arm on the left side. Make sure it isn't popped up out of position. The front end should be in the square cut out area to the right of the gear.

Hey, thanks!!! You hit the symptom exactly...I could tell the feed mechanism wasn't quite in the right place but was reluctant to try to force it as flimsy as the roller engage arm is....but, being able to know where it was supposed to be, then, no problem....again, thanks for the info..you're bookmarked, for sure!
