Epson Stylus 900 stuck lever lock

The little white lever that locks the printhead when it's in the rest position is stuck on my Epson 900. It's stuck in the locked position, so the print head gets jammed on the lever making a loud noise and flashes the error lights. When I push the lever down, it's fine until the printhead goes back to the rest position. Is there a spring that holds it down? Can I just remove the lever and have the printer function normally? Or is there a simple fix? Help?
Now the problem is intermittent. I can generally avoid the problem by changing the paper thickness lever to +. But the little white lever lock keeps getting stuck. Is that lever necessary, can I remove/break the lever with little consequence?
