HP 4050T strange issues

everytime paper runs out of tray 2 and when you put new paper in. The printer resets itself so it seems and only wants to print from tray 1 ONLY. It does not keep the old settings from before when it always print to tray 2 unless otherwise specified. After a few bangs and hit on the printer plus constant pulling out and putting back the tray 2 it will take the old settings. Not sure what's the problem but I think it maybe a sensor or something. I guess it's not picking up tray 2 after I take it out and add more paper until a few tries of pulling and putting the tray back in again and again.

Let me know if my theory is correct or if anyone else ran into this similar problem.

Could be the paper length adjustment plate not locked. As you slide the plate back and forth, you will notice the white plastic levers on the right side of the tray moving in and out. These make switches in the printer that tell it what size the tray is selected to. Could be the board that has the switches on it. Try swapping tray 2 and 3 and see if it corrects the problem.
