HP 6P Laserjet Smears Ink

Left side of paper the ink smears. IS it the fuser?

Could be the fuser. Easy enough to tell. Do a half page stop test. Feed the paper from the MF tray. When the tail end just disappears into the printer, open the lid and take out the cartridge. If you see the smearing on the paper, it's the cartridge. If you don't, it's the fuser film. You can get both on this site.

Hi - I tried to follow your half page test but I don't know what you mean by the MF tray.

I installed a new toner cartridge a week or so ago, and everything was fine. But suddenly the ink is smearing on the whole page.

Could you please explain how I know if this is the cartridge or the fuser?

For a 5L, just put the paper in the manual feed slot and do the half page test.
