HP LaserJet 4M Plus Logic Board Question

We've just purchased the subject printer and are networking it to a couple of MAC's running OS 9.

We plugged the printer in and it printed test pages without a hitch.

After installing drivers and cables, the computers are not seeing the printer. This is a replacement for an identical model that we've used for years so we are familiar with the setup process. We've changed outlets, cables and JetDirect cards, as well as tried a couple of cold resets, but still the printer is not seen by any of our MAC's.

A tech that helps us out from time to time believes that the logic board needs to be replaced. If one of you very knowledgable people could provide your opinion, I would very much appreciate it.

Also, if it is the logic board, could you please tell me if the replacement work is very difficult?

Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.

You might have purchased it as a 4M Plus, but it's possible that someone pulled the Postscript SiMM out and maybe the memory. To be seen by a Mac, it needs the SIMM and an additional 4mb of memory. You can see that on the test page. It should say what is installed. I have never seen a formatter cause the problem you are having, and if I've never seen it, then it's doubtful it is a formatter problem. If you want to visually check for the SIMMS, then you pop off the plastic panel on the right side. The SIMMS are located behind the metal plate. There should be one captive screw securing it.

I was hoping you were around this evening. I have been reading posts on this site for some time now and truly respect your experience and abilities. Thank you for replying.

I can't believe I hadn't checked for the Postscript SIMM. The printer is at the office but I have a copy of the test page. Here's what the test page says:

Installed options: NONE
Installed Personalities: PCL

If the Postscript SIMM was installed it would say so under installed personalities, right?

Thanks, Moe.

I just ran a test page on my LaserJet 4m.

Under installed personalities it says: PCL & POSTSCRIPT

Do you still have the old printer to "borrow" the Postscript DIMM and Memory modules from?

If you need modules and Moe does not have them I might have some, I seem to recall a 4M+ being in my collection of HP printers. (I have over 100)

I've got some Postscript DIMMS. It should also say at least 6mb memory installed for the Postscript to be enabled. Click on my name to email me if you need anything.

Stephen & Moe,

Thank you so much for your help. As you predicted, Moe, there is one 16MB SIMM installed and no Postscript. I pulled one from one of our old printers and we are up and running.

Once again, this site has saved my butt. Thank you so much!
