HP 7210 All in One - Printer Cartridge Replacement

Have had the above printer for about 2 years - finally went to replace the black cartridge and I had a very difficult time getting the 96-black cartridge out. Finally did that, but I could not get the new one back in.

It was printing fine, until the ink ran low. The replacement is the same in every way as the other one.

Talked to HP who told me I could send them $259 for a replacement since the warranty was up on it which is odd since I could probably get a printer just as good at the store. They claim this is the right cartridge for the printer

Has anyone ever seen a cartridge act like this? Maybe I broke it pulling it out, but it does not seem so. The ridges on the top of the cartridge seem to big for any of the grooves it could go in. And the bottom of the cartridge hits the plastic wall at the base of the printer cartridge area.

I am stumped, obviously.
