hp lj4p How to turn off self test?

I hope this may be an easy question for someone who knows what they are doing. I've been unable to find an answer elsewhere.

When my HP Laserjet4 Plus is turned on it does a self test and prints out two pages. Is there any way to stop this wasteful behaviour? I prefer not to leave the thing running continuously, but often I only want to print out one or two pages. In other words the self-test is effectively doubling my printing costs and filling up landfill with wasted paper!

I've had a good search through the menus but haven't discovered a way to switch this setting off. Can anyone here help, or is this 'feature' specific to the lj4? (I know that the lj5 doesn't waste paper like this.)

Many thanks for your help.
I believe it is probably printing a Demo Page on power up, not a self test page.

The following search should help:
