Hp HP DeskJet Plus

HP Laserjet 4 Plus

I bought this printer about a year ago and remember having a problem trying to install it when i first got it but eventually figured out the problem... but i need some help this time.

I went to hp.com to get the drivers for xp. run the exe file to extract them, go to add printer wizard, select the driver for the laserjet 4 plus from the dir that the drivers were extracted to and then run a test page after it installs but nothing happens. the printer icon shows in the taskbar for a second then dissapears just like the page printed normaly. But if i unplug/turn off the printer, windows will show an error that it is unplugged and wont print.

the printer is online and reads "00 Ready" and does not/has never shown an error code.

Any ideas would be a HUGE help, thanks in advance!
First off why are you downloading drivers from hp. The driver for that printer is contained in the os and all you have to do is go to add printer and if attached to lpt 1 just follow the prompts. Now if it does not print after that, then you may have an issue with you cable, port or printer. To test go to a dos window by pointing to start click and click run. Type command and hit enter. At the prompt type cd\\windows and hit enter. Now type dir >> lpt1 and hit enter and the printer should print a directory of windows. If it does not, then you have a port, cable or printer formatter issue. Usually the cable. If it does print, then somehow you are not loading the driver correctly.
