Tray 1 feeding problem on HP 4100 DTN

Working on a problem with an HP Laser 4100 DTN. User is able to print fine from trays 2 and 3, but when she tries from tray 1, it makes a groaning noise, and eventually causes a 13.1 paper jam. I lifted up the lid, removed the toner and inspected the pickup roller. It didn't look too old, still had tread. I did notice a piece somewhat behind it that resembles the blade on a disposable razor. This piece was loose and when I touched it, it fell off of whatever it was attached to. I have no idea what the part is called and what the function is, but am wondering if this can be the cause of the paper not feeding? The surface is completely smooth, but I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Here is a link to a picture of the part, sorry for the quality. http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/7628/partfb6.jpg

Thanks so much

Jason
