HP Laserjet 3100 prints curved characters

Printer copies and prints what looks like italics and squiggly lines. Best description may be that a group of numbers looks like the curved security numbers you would encounter when logging into a secure site where the instructions are "please type in this number" . The 3100 has also been making a mechanical motor sound like it is straining in conjunction with this happening. Otherwise this baby has been a very reliable workhorse since 1999. Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix ?
Have you tried another toner cartridge, (as I grasp at straws).

If the motor is straining something is binding, if you remove the cartridge and close the machine I think the motor will run for a few seconds, does it sound like it's binding with the cartridge removed?
