Overlapping Characters - HP Color LJ 2840

I have a new HP Color LaserJet 2840. When printing several pages I randomly obtain overlapping characters. The information is correct but the alignment is off. The overlapping occurs off and on, and can be off as much as one space to half a line. I will be grateful for any suggestions.

Thank you for the information. I have scanned a page, with the overlapping text, into a PDF file; is there a method of posting the file to this site. I have also listed additional details about the printer below:

The affected pages are in black and white, with no graphics.

The operating system is MS Windows XP, with all security patches up-to-date.

The application when the overlapping problem occurs is MS Word 2003.

The printer driver in use is the HP Color LaserJet 2840 PCL 6 (Ver. 60.34.78.41).

The firmware date-code of the printer is 20050901.

Thank you for your help.
