Epson Stylus Photo 700

This printer just developed a carriage problem. On startup it cycles the cartridges once to the left, then back to the right, then slightly to the left, then all the way right where there is grinding sound and all the red lights come on and stay on. The power light blinks, and it does not do anything else. It worked, then it didn't. I like this printer and would like to keep it, but there are new ones for way less than the cost of getting it fixed. If I can do it myself I'll keep it. Before this happened it printed one full color photo just fine, then printed a seond all in pink, leaving out the text. If this is worth fixing, let me know. Thanks for any advice.

One of the first things I'd check in this situation is that the carriage guide bar (shiny bar the carriage (cartridges) slide over is clean.
Run your finger over it and see if you get a film of black. If so, clean as much of the bar as possible and then apply a thin coat of lightweight oil.
