I have the same problem with my brothers mfc-210c. The black is plugged up. Does anyone know how to uplug it or remove the print head?

Same here. I have the "unable to clean" error and after purchasing all new cartridges can't get it to clean. I realize it's difficult to get the print head out ot clean but there's got to be a way right?

Try this...

Go into maintenace mode by pressing ( Menu * 2 8 6 4 ) within 2 seconds. You should be in the maintenance mode now. Press 80 and scroll down to purge count, if the figure is more than 6000, press 2 7 8 3 to reset the purge count. The printer will restart and everything normal. Good Luck. - Anonymous

Hi there,

I own a MFC-410CN, have had the "unable to clean" message display for a few days and did not have any luck getting rid of it... until I found the purge count resetting suggestion. Thank you soooooooooo much. I was ready to just go out and buy a new MFC!!!

Nothing helps, still missing yellow and red. Tried resetting purge, still no help. The question still remains unanswered, how do you access the heads and are they actually repairable?

The problem appears to be ink feed to the print head. Dryed ink in the line. This should be a fixable problem.

Thanks for any info.

Gene

As it turns out the MFC-201c is about the biggest POS ever made. All the problems with print head go unanswerd by Brother as if it's an impossibility to get it right. This site is suppose to be a repair site but you notice it's all questions and no answers.

Short answer is it's junk. It is useable, however, if the black still works. Brother is just too cheap to address the problem with the printhead clogging up.

Good luck.

The UG points to a paper clip or object in the printer, I've checked but can't find any paper or objects stuck. I would like to disassemble the printer and check it out completly. I am replacing it, but I need to find the problem. Does anyone have a guide or take down instructions?

I've been getting this message for about 4 months. I finally got around to calling them today and was on the phone for 30 minutes for them to tell me that it needs repair.

Pres "menu/set" "black start" and "0" within 3 seconds, the green lights should blink if you did it right. Then press "82". I got a "machine error 4F".

I called the repair shop & they want $25 just to look at it. Hoping I can save all that by finding the fix here.

Hope you have better luck than I. - Anonymous
To exit maintenace mode and switch to standby, press the 9 key twice in the initial stage of the maintenace mode.

Hope all is well?

Hey there people, those who have the "UNABLE TO CLEAN" message, please be aware, this error is caused by the purge count reaching its maximum, of something to the tune of 6127 purges.

When it reaches this value, the purged ink tank will most likely be full (brother has calculated this to a safe maximum, below a critical level for obvious reasons.)

Before or after clearing the purge count, you will need to either clean or replace the purged ink box, failure to do this will result in a very nasty mess, as your printer will begin to leak ink all over your desk.

This guide is of use to you if you speak german:

http://www.hstt.net/refill-faq/inside.html#Brother_mfc215c

however with Google, you should be able to translate this into English and read how to open the printer.

once you can see the purge box, pull the two pipes off, remove the box, and either clean (you will need gloves) or replace this.

To clear the error message, do this:

1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC210C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.
FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).
Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).
2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information list (function code 80).
3) Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list.
4) Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.
5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
6) Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

This will resolve error message 46, and ensure that you dont end up with a diabolical mess.

Another Brother MFC 210C victim.
Printer has worked fine for some time now, then error message "Unable to Print" came on.
Contacted Brother & after identifying the error code "4F" was told I've received good service from my MFC, write it off and buy a new one. So I know where his priority is!!
Can someone advise what error code 4F is, any resolution and how to access print head to clean.
Thanx.

In the past, I had experienced the problem of not printing and rectified it by following the maintenance mode method ...it worked like a charm..MANY thanks.

However, I have a new problem???

Printer prints but only with Black and Blue colours.
In the beginning, the message was "Can't initiate"

The yellow and red inks are full but having tried purge etc, these colours still do not appear.
I also cannot get the printer to indicate ink levels...just goes straight to cleaning...ANYBODY know what I am talking about...please help.
The printer has been pretty good and hate to throw it away.

As another helpful tip, anyone who owns a compressor or some sort of compressed air, blow the pressurized air into the the tip where the ink cartridge is. Ive done that and it cleans out the clogged ink. Just pace a cloth over the ink cartridge slot to keep ink from flying up and into your surroundings/self.

...YIKES!? Help Please?!
I had the 'unable to clean' error too...
I used " *2864 maintenence fix" but got anxious &
accidentally :) scrolled to 'PC' instead of 'Purge'
& entered the '2783' in PC? area instead!!

I did it in the correct area next & did work wonders!
...horray! Unable to clean is gone! :) ~but~
What is the maintainence area called 'PC' & is this
going to cause major issues?
I dont remember specifically what it said there but
I believe alot of numbers ...now has all 0's ending
in one number 3.

Ive been cleaning the 210C since that now works :)
but Print Test shows no Cyan dashes at all with
virtually no Black (2 light/watery look dashes)
All ink was new when started but now shows Near
empty Black, Yellow, Cyan
Also saw an error somewhere in my travels of 'A1'
& when trying to just print anything (besides Test)
...nothing comes out on paper?

What did I do?? Make it worse?
Any and all help appreciated! Cat

My brother MFC 210C "reads unable to iniate". I've read all the above and even purged and still does not work. Will try some new cartridges. In the mean time what causes the error message? Can't find anything in the manuals. Unable to iniate...what? If someone tells me my car won't start (iniate). Why is it because...there is no battery or because I need to use the key in the ignition! Get the point...what is the reason...so I can fix the problem. It's an older printer but a really good one for a number of reasons of being its footprint.
