LaserJet 4, paper jam

Hi all, I have used this site a number of times
to point me in the right direction while trouble
shooting other printer problems. This one has me
stumped. I have a Laser Jet 4, everything appears
to work fine, the paper is picked up from the
feed tray fine, it seems to make it into the
registration area, but each and every time it
registers a 13 paper jam, while the paper is
inside the machine. There is no accordian effect.
The page appears to be about 3/4s printed. I have
to remove the toner cartridge to get at it. It
appears to be somewhat folded almost in the middle
but it looks to me like perhaps a sensor near the
exit rollers is not picking the paper's presence
up so it stops rolling. Not sure if that is on
the right track or even makes any sense. Any
direction on where I might find a sensor
back there to check or if perhaps this is an
issue that is known and some sort of suggestion
on how to fix it would be great.

Keep up the great work on the site, I know my
boss loves it, we have saved 8 printers this
year that otherwise would have been tossed...
thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Jody

It sounds like it's getting way past registration. Registration is before any print goes on the paper. Is it actually making it to the fuser assembly? I suspect the fuser isn't driving. I'd try pulling out the 2 screws holding the fuser in, remove it and look at the gear that's driving the fuser assembly on the left side. Check it for missing teeth. We have a video and replacement gear for it if that's the case.

Hey Moe,

Ok once again you are a genius, I yanked the fuser
assembly and sure enough one of the gears is clearly
broken, I assume by your comments above that I
don't need to replace the entire assembly?
What is the cost of the kit to repair it??

Thanks in advance.

Moe,
I'll add my voice to the chorus requesting a price for this repair kit. Your price and when can you ship?

Thank you.

We shot a few comprehensive videos of different printers. The purpose of this was to be able to offer custom kits when needed. I'm not sure if you guys want the fuser drive gear in the printer, or one of the fuser gears on the assembly. Be specific. Price will be about $25. I can ship tomorrow.

Which gear specifically, they go by number of teeth. Count the teeth and let me know. Also did you need the video?
The gears aren't that hard to change, just 2 screws hold the end cap on.

Hey Moe,

Well this thing is beat up inside. I can't count
the number of teeth because only about 2/3 of
the gear is still there. I can tell you it's the
largest one, the one that is in the middle of
the three, it encircles the opening where the
lamp is. The other thing I notice the cap that
covers them also had a couple of small pieces
of plastic broken off of it. Is it a part that
can be replaced??

I don't think I would need the video for this
one no. You are right it was pretty simple
to get at them.

Thanks.
