Removed covers to see operation. This is what happens.

1. Paper feed system is fine. No broken teeth on gears, etc. Paper feeds perfectly from tray to printing position, and when pressing the paper eject button paper ejects smoothly.

2. As soon as printing begins, paper and printhead do not work properly together. Printhead may move across paper properly, but paper may only advance about 1/3 the normal distance. Sometimes paper does not advance at all. Other times paper advances, and printer prints properly for a few lines, then paper stall again.

3. Sometimes printhead will stall about midstroke -- halfway across paper -- and stick there. When that happens, printer will hum loudly, and after a few (5-10) seconds, printhead will move back to the off position (fully to the right ) and the red out-of-paper or paper jam light will come on steadily. Green power light will stop blinking, as when printing stops normally. When paper feed (top) button is then pushed, green power light and red paper-jam light will both blink, and printhead will move about 1/2 inch to the left, then jam again with the same humming noise, then after 5-10 seconds move back to resting position. Red jam light will now be blinking. If I press the power OFF button at this time, the printhead will not move, but will hum as if stuck, and after the usual 5-10 secs the greenlight will go out and the power will be off.

4. There seems to be no physical resistance in paper path, gear motion, printhead movement, etc. Cleaned everything visible, and lubed shafts very carefully. The problem seems to be between the printhead and paper advance interaction.

5. In those rare moments when the beast prints, everything seems normal, then suddenly the paper stops advancing properly, and either advances a tiny bit (1/3 normal) or stops advancing at all, and the printhead goes over the same line again and again until it jams in midstroke.

6. When this happened many months ago, after running two or three sheets through the printer with bad paper feed, the printer would free up and print properly for as many pages as I wanted, as long as I didn't stop printing for very long. After not printing for maybe an hour or two, the same thing repeated. At that time, I was told to clean the rollers and ink pads, and either that cured it, or it cured itself for some other reason, but after that it worked fine for months, until recently. Now, nothing I do helps.

Any thoughts short of getting another printer? Art
Clean and oil the carriage guide shaft. Use a lite oil like 3 in 1, tri-flow or sewing machine oil. Don't use WD-40 because it is too lite.
