Epson 800--no quality or black print

Printer repair isn't my thing, so this one has had me for a while. I have an Epson Stylus 800 that refuses to print reliably anything in black (for instance, a test document: Most often, it simply prints one or two sweeps across the page of anything black on the whole sheet; occasionally, it prints like every few lines so that you can almost make out what's being printed) except for a mess of black schmutz trailing down the margin of the paper *all* the time. Color still prints OK (lines show up when it's not in 720x720) and I do not refill my cartridges.

Any suggestions?

What usually works for us is to spray some Windex with ammonia on the sponge pads that the heads park on. Park the heads and let it sit for half a day. Do a few head cleaning cycles, repeat if necessary.

How do I easily expose the sponge pads that the heads park on? Can this be done without disassembly? I can see the pads for a few seconds when the cleaning cycle is activiated or when printing a document.
PS: since I started this email I've started the procedure recommended (soaked the sponge for only 15 minutes and it's like a miracle! I was getting zero black ink out after repeated cleaning cycles, but now I've got about 80\% quality working! I've already ordered the inject headcleaning kit and will use, but this is great. To think, just yesterday I was tempted to replace this printer(even though I was 90\% sure it was only dirty due to a paper jam and the paper sitting in the printer overnight.
