hp deskjet 600
My trusted old Deskjet 600 makes what best can be described as a
"clack clack" noise as the print head moves back and forth during printing. Can anyone help me out with this problem?

Lube the printhead carriage bar. Not with any thick lube! Use WD40 or 3-in-1 sparingly! Just wipe a bit on. It's the silver bar which you can see when you open the cover.
Good Luck!

Petroleum based oils are a bad idea. Synthetic lubricant is the way to go. There is a good synthetic lube in the Specials Section of this site. Or you can go to the local hardware store and get some silicon or teflon based lubricant.
