Hp HP LaserJet 5SI

hp 5si clicking noise and tray 2 jams

A few weeks ago printer began clicking constantly while printing.
Noise seems to be associated with pickup rollers bouncing up and down. Since this time I get an intermittent paper jam on tray 2. I have already replaced pickup rollers and separation rollers for trays 2 and 3.
You can watch the rollers through the little access door above tray 2. You might be able to figure out what's going on with them by observing them.

Thanks, Moe. Been there. Done that. The rollers jump up and down with both trays 2 and 3. But the paper transfer seems to be much smoother on tray 3, which does not jam. I can watch tray 2 and see the jam as it is occuring. - dgray
Have you tried swapping the clutches between the 2 trays? The clutch is on the same shaft as one of the rollers. Just pulls off. It could be sticking causing the jumping.

I might try that. Do you have any idea what could have caused the clicking noise to begin? The jamming problem started at the same time the clicking noise began. Thanks for your help, but I cannot immediately act on your suggestions, because the printer belongs to one of our customers who is nearly 50 miles away. But we do want to figure out their problem and help them. Thanks!

That being the case, I'd make sure I had a PIU with me when I went over there. When I have to drive that far to a customer, I make sure I have everything that could cause it. If I have one, I bring a whole printer with me to serve as either a loaner or a parts donor.

Moe is 100\% correct. The PIU unit is the probable cause. There is a gear assembly which interacts with the motor on the unit to drive the pickup gears. Either the gear is broken or even the motor may have become loose, however, since tray 3 is ok I would lean towards the gear or something with the shafts the 3 rollers fit on.

Thanks Moe and dmzcompute. You have given me some good info to work with. Part of my problem is that I am not very familiar with this printer. One question I still have is this: When the printer is working properly, is it normal for all 3 rollers to constantly bounce up and down and make a clicking noise while the printer is printing? If this is not normal, then what do you think is most likely causing this to happen? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I can not remember is that is normal operation, but if you change the PIU, those rollers and the mech which controls them will be replaced.

All three rollers better not be bouncing up and down.

The pick roller is the only one that moves down and then up, it drops down once for each page that is being fed after a second or two it goes back up. If the roller is going down then up more than once per page the PIU is not behaving well. (pick roller is the one with the black core)

I changed a PIU for this problem about a week ago, it only bounced the pick roller for tray 2.

Any ideas on where to order a PIU unit for an hp laserjet 5si ? I am mainly concerned about getting a good reliable part with some good directions on how to install it. But I would rather not pay top dollar if possible. Thanks.

You can email Moe at this site to see if he has them. If not two places which sell them on advance exchange are partsnow.com and depot-america.com. I doubt either of these places provides instructions but post your email and I am sure someone here will provide them to you.

Thanks for the info. How can I contact Moe? I thought he would respond to my post, but I have not heard from him. Thanks. - dgray
