Epson Epson Stylus Color 440

EPSON 440 woes - will not initialize on power up

My Epson 440 was running like a song for last few years. Then two things happened :
- i moved the printer
- tried to fixe it to my son's win98 machine

Now the printer does not initialize on power up. Here is what happens:

On power up the printer head starts from the right sides goes 1 inch to left side as if to initialize then comes back a wee-bit short. It continues doing this and in about 2 minutes the head goes all the way to the left. There it gets stuck and tries to be go further left.

I've never seen a similar behaviour, try cleaning carefully the carriage guide shaft with a soft cloth then lubricate it. I use Zeppreserve NC, a common penetrating oil, but i believe that oil for sewing machines should be suitable too.
