Laserjet 5L paper feed

I have a LaserJet 5L that was picking up multiple
sheets. I went to HP's page (partsurfer.hp.com)
for part identifiers, they recommended changing
separator pad and pickup rollers. After doing so,
it picks up one sheet, but only feeds 4 cm (1.75")
and stops. Sounds similar to Todd Haverstock's
problem. Put old parts back, works but takes
multi-pages. Put new parts in, paper stops after
4 cm. Repeat re-assembly multiple times, problem
related to separation pad: consistently stops
paper feed, and I know I have the parts in the
right place and the right order. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.
This is why our kits include an almost fool-proof instructional video. Are you remembering to lock the roller arms back in place? Are the black mylar plastic paper guides straight and not kinked? As a last resort, grab a flashlight and watch the roller to see what's happening. All these precautions and more are pointed out in our video.

Very true, I've got one of your videos for a
laserjet IIIP scanner assembly swap, and it's
excellent. However, this printer works (but grabs
multi-pages) when I assemble with old separator
pad, but always hangs at the same spot with the
new separator pad. I've examined every visible
component and can find no difference. It's
really bugging me.

Did you try my suggestions? It doesn't make sense that the new pad won't work and the old one does. All it does is act as a brake on the back of the paper. You must have done something differently in the 2 reassemblies that make you think it's the fault of the pad.
